Guiselt Thaiz

Guiselt Thaiz was born in New York City and raised by her Dominican mother in Santo Domingo. Her mother introduced her to the world of classical ballet, which she studied rigorously and taught until switching her focus to visual arts. She then attended Altos de Chavon School of Design, graduating with a degree in Visual Communication. From there began an ongoing period of migration. She moved first to Buenos Aires, then to New York City, and on to Berlin, where she received a master’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of Arts Berlin (UdK), winning the President Prize at UdK in 2021. Her creative focus has always drawn her towards exploring identity—her own, and that of the larger collective. In order to do so, her practice uses sculptures and paintings, including conceptual and performative elements. She remains as much influenced by the ballet of her youth as by migration and fairy tales.
